When we talk of congenital anomalies and birth defects, heart malformation are the most common amongst them and account to almost one of every 100 births globally. Of these, almost 25% of them are fatal. Many a times paediatricians fail to recognize and miss out on diagnosing these defects, as the new born heart and lungs function normally and continue to mature for a few initial days.
Truncus arteriosus is actually a heart defect which leads to severe problems the circulatory system. It is a rare type of heart disease, and it is congenital in which a large blood vessel leads out of the left and right ventricles, instead of the normal two blood vessels, that is, one pulmonary artery and aorta. The two lower chambers of the heart also miss a portion of the wall which separates them.
